First Friday Community Forums
We will resume our Equity Reset First Friday Community Forum Series in Fall 2024!
An “Equity Reset,” Berkeley Lab's approach to racial equity learning & development, calls for the recurring allocation of time and attention--two of our most precious resources-- to this work and it is a way to put the Lab’s organizational value of stewardship into practice, and embody the behaviors and practices essential to sustaining a diverse, inclusive, equitable work culture.
There are two levels of learning (individual/team & community) involved in the Equity Reset approach. At the INDIVIDUAL/TEAM level, employees can work through the Equity Reset self-guided curriculum solo or with their team.
Two times a year, at the COMMUNITY level, the Lab’s new Learning & Culture Office in partnership with the IDEA Office will hold structured forums for employees to exchange learnings & workshop their equity commitments in our First Friday Community Forum Series.
This Fall we will once again be jointly hosting Equity Reset with the UC Berkeley Physics Department, who have been holding their own First Friday workshops these past four years. We thought it would be powerful to bring these two communities together once more to deepen our anti-racism learning and practice.
With the full support of the IDEA Senior Leadership Council, Equity Reset is available to all Lab employees.
How Do I Participate?
The program encompasses two levels of learning:
Individual/Team Level – Each employee is invited to work through the Equity Reset curriculum on their own or in self-organized peer learning circles. You can begin using the curriculum immediately.
Community Level – On the First Friday of every month, we will hold structured, facilitated Equity Reset Community Forums for employees across the Lab to exchange learnings & workshop their anti-racism commitments.
What is Expected of Me?
To participate you are expected to:
Dedicate at least 1-2 hours of work time monthly to self-study. This self-study can be completed on First Fridays, in advance of the Community Forum, or completed independently (alone or with your team) on any other day. Start with the “Reflection” content for months 1 & 2 and then move to “Action” in month 3.
Attend First Friday Community Forums (2 hours monthly, at least 3 months in a row)
